Jazz Arts: Composition
Pianist, composer/arranger, and educator Mike Holober served as Artistic Director/Conductor of the Westchester Jazz Orchestra from 2007 to 2013. Since 2012 Mike has served as Associate Guest Conductor of the HR Big Band (Frankfurt, Germany). In this capacity he has written and conducted projects for Miguel Zenon, Kurt Rosenwinkel, and Lonnie Liston Smith and conducted and arranged for Jane Monheit, Terje Rypdal, and Billy Cobham, among others. In January 2014 as Guest Conductor of the WDR Big Band (Cologne, Germany) he arranged and conducted a project for Eli Degibri and Avishai Cohen (trumpet).
He has also performed with/had his works performed and recorded by the Stockholm Jazz Orchestra, the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, the Gotham Wind Symphony (as composer-in-residence), the Airmen of Note, the Tim Ries Rolling Stones Project, John Patitucci, the Prism, American, and New York Saxophone Quartets, and many others. He has performed on over sixty recordings as a sideman and released four acclaimed recordings as leader. An associate professor at the City College of New York, Mike Holober is a MacDowell Fellow, Ucross Foundation Fellow, and Yaddo Guest. Since 2007 he has been Associate Director of the BMI Jazz Composer’s Workshop, founded by the legendary jazz composers Bob Brookmeyer and Manny Albam, where he co-teaches with Musical Director Jim McNeely.
